HC Deb 27 July 1949 vol 467 cc2470-1
46. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Minister of Defence in view of mutual obligations under the Atlantic Pact, what further expenditure it is proposed to incur on the atomic bomb.

The Minister of Defence (Mr. A. V. Alexander)

I have nothing to add to my reply to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Winchester (Mr. G. Jeger), on 12th May, 1948, of which I am sending my hon. Friend a copy.

Mr. Hughes

While thanking the Minister in advance for the copy of the reply I am to have, may I ask him if he is aware that since 17th May the Chancellor of the Exchequer has issued an appeal to all Departments to reduce Government expenditure, and as an atom bomb is unnecessary for the welfare of this country, will he start by reducing this expenditure?
