HC Deb 25 July 1949 vol 467 c1792
19. Mr. Turton

asked the Minister of Food why his Department refused to grant extra rations for the purpose of the tea provided at Salton, near Pickering, on 20th July to the touring Australian farmers.

Mr. Strachey

I am inquiring into the circumstances and will write to the hon. Member very shortly, but on the facts available I regret that a special allocation was refused in this case.

Mr. Turton

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that his Department refused this request and that, in consequence, 50 Australian farmers could not be properly and hospitably entertained?

Mr. Strachey

Although the refusal was in accordance with the strict letter of the regulations, I think it was a mistake.
