HC Deb 21 July 1949 vol 467 c1542
38. Mr. Linstead

asked the Minister of Education whether he is aware of the steps being taken by the London County Council to increase Mayfield Girls' School, Putney, from 500 pupils to 2,000 pupils; whether this project has been approved by him; and whether any playing-field accommodation will be left when the new school is completed.

Mr. Tomlinson

I approved this proposal in principle in June, 1948, and in April, 1949, I confirmed a compulsory purchase order made by the London County Council for the acquisition of land to extend the site of the school. The enlarged site of approximately nine acres will, with suitable planning, provide reasonably adequate playgrounds, but not a playing-field, for the school.

Mr. Linstead

Did the right hon. Gentleman ask the London County Council to try to find alternative sites before they agreed to the destruction of the present accommodation?

Mr. Tomlinson

The usual procedure was followed; statutory notices were exhibited and there was no opposition or objection.
