HC Deb 20 July 1949 vol 467 cc1344-5
5. Mr. Langford-Holt

asked the Postmaster-General, in view of the desirability of increasing television lineage above the 405 at present in use, what alterations will be necessary to transmitters and receivers when this change is made.

The Postmaster-General (Mr. Wilfred Paling)

Entirely, or almost entirely, new transmitters and receivers would be required for any worth-while increase in the number of lines. I do not agree that any such change would be justified for some years to come.

Mr. Langford-Holt

Would the right hon. Gentleman agree that ultimately such a change will have to be made? Against the coming of that time has he now plans and ideas as to how that change can be made without interference with the service?

Mr. Paling

It may be that the change will be made, but it will be some years ahead.

Mr. Eric Fletcher

If it were eventually decided to adopt the 819 line system, which is perfected in France, would not all the existing receivers be redundant? Would it not be desirable for the Government to reconsider this matter as soon as practicable?

Mr. Paling

I issued a statement some time ago saying that the 405 line definition would remain in this country for some time to come, and would be standardised.
