HC Deb 20 July 1949 vol 467 cc1359-60
29. Mr. Skinnard

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of the fact that the taxation of uncultivated land in St. Kitts-Nevis has the useful effect of causing more land to be brought under cultivation, he will request the Governor of the Colony to increase the present low rate of 12 cents an acre.

Mr. Creech Jones

No, Sir. All arable land except that necessary for pasture and forest cover is cultivated in St. Kitts. In Nevis the Government's policy is to encourage present cultivation on a leasehold basis, and my advice is that increased land tax would not enlarge the cultivated area.
