§ 39. Mr. Gallacherasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what was the purpose of the raid, by plain clothes police, on the home of Fang Fang, a leading Hong Kong citizen, on 13th June; and what was discovered during the raid.
Mr. Creech JonesThe search was carried out under the provisions of the Hong Kong Arms and Ammunition Ordinance. It was for suspected illicit weapons. None was found.
§ Mr. GallacherIs it not the case that the authorities knew perfectly well that there was no possibility of finding anything whatever in this citizen's house, and that this raid was part of a series of deliberate provocations now being carried out in Hong Kong?
Mr. Creech JonesThe authorities in Hong Kong are responsible for internal security, and the activities of this man are well known to them.
§ Mr. W. FletcherDid the police find anything wrong-wrong?
§ Mr. GallacherIt may be a very funny matter for Members opposite, but it is a serious matter when a raid is made on the house of any citizen. Is there any evidence of any kind that would justify a raid being made on this man's house any more than a raid being made on the houses of Members opposite, which would also be very wrong-wrong?
Mr. Creech JonesI will merely add that the gentleman referred to is not a native or a leading or active citizen of Hong Kong.
§ Mr. ThurtleIs my right hon. Friend aware that I hope he will not be intimidated by Questions in this House, but will encourage the authorities in Hong Kong to take all necessary steps to preserve security.
