HC Deb 20 July 1949 vol 467 cc1366-7
45. Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

asked the Prime Minister whether he will appoint a Royal Commission to inquire into the present state of the divorce law; and to make recommendations.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee)

No, Sir.

Lieut.-Colonel Lipton

Is my right hon. Friend aware that many people of all parties and creeds are convinced that the present state of the divorce law should be examined by a responsible body? Is he further aware that these continual refusals to appoint a Royal Commission will cause bitter disappointment to many thousands of men and women who are now condemned to life-long frustration and misery?

The Prime Minister

This is not an appropriate time to appoint such a commission.
