HC Deb 18 July 1949 vol 467 cc942-3
4. Brigadier Thorp

asked the Minister of Food why farmers who require no licence to sell poultry and rabbits to a wholesaler and by retail are not allowed to sell to a retailer without a wholesale licence; and if he will annul this regulation.

Mr. Strachey

We cannot yet throw the wholesale trade open to anyone, but I think it is logical to allow producers to sell to wholesalers or to the public.

Brigadier Thorp

Can the Minister explain what advantage it is to the people to retain this control?

Mr. Strachey

As long as we have to control the prices, I think it is necessary to control the wholesale trade.
