HC Deb 14 July 1949 vol 467 cc661-2
64. Mr. Harrison

asked the Minister of Health if he proposes to take the necessary steps to prevent the continuing pollution of the River Trent by excessive pollution coming from the Derwent; and if he is aware that the present low water has revealed the extent of the pollution by the presence of thousands of dead fish and the stench of the water, which constitutes a menace to the health of the districts on the lower Trent banks.

Mr. Bevan

I understand that the conditions referred to may be due to the prolonged hot weather rather than to pollution of the river. I am, however, making further inquiries and will communicate with my hon. Friend.

Mr. Harrison

In making these further inquiries will my right hon. Friend take into consideration that many rivers meet in the Nottingham district, and that this is the only river that causes pollution to the extent of thousands of fish being killed?

Mr. Bevan

I will make inquiries into that.
