§ 17. Mr. W. J. Brownasked the Minister of Labour on what date he was notified of the existence of a dispute, as to the employers' right to select staff in the cinema industry, arising out of the arrangement by which unions in this industry act as Employment Exchanges; on what date the issue was referred for arbitration to the National Arbitration Tribunal; and when it is anticipated that the hearing of the case will take place.
§ Mr. IsaacsA trade dispute regarding the operation of an agreement between organisations of employers and workers in the cinema industry concerning the selection of staff for employment was reported under the Conditions of Employment and National Arbitration Orders on 24th February, 1949. Endeavours were made to promote a settlement, but without success, and on 11th June the dispute was referred for settlement to the National Arbitration Tribunal. I understand that the Tribunal will hear the parties on 10th August.
