HC Deb 27 January 1949 vol 460 cc1101-2
45. Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will reconsider his refusal of a grant under the Vocational Training Scheme to a young man, particulars of whom have been sent to him, who is in course of receiving training in wireless telegraphy.

The Minister of Labour (Mr. Isaacs)

No, Sir. Grants cannot be provided for training new entrants to this already overcrowded occupation.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that a list containing the names of 100 vacancies during the coming year has been forwarded to his Department; and in view of the very large market for this kind of skill, will he not reconsider the matter?

Mr. Isaacs

I must admit that my attention has not been drawn to the facts stated in the first part of that supplementary question and I will look into it. At the moment there are 41 of our trained men unable to find employment.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

Is not the right hon. Gentleman aware that his Parliamentary Secretary has the facts and figures which I sent him? I should be grateful if he would reply.
