HC Deb 27 January 1949 vol 460 cc1076-7
4. Mr. Piratin

asked the Minister of Education how many emergency trained teachers have completed two or more years of probationary service; how many of these have been informed that they have completed their probation to his Department's satisfaction and what is the maximum period after the probationary service has been completed that information that they have passed satisfactorily is given to them.

Mr. Tomlinson

About 1,000 teachers trained in emergency colleges have now completed their period of probationary service. I regret that the other information for which the hon. Member asks cannot readily be made available.

Mr. Piratin

Is the Minister aware that my reason for drawing attention to this matter is because many people who have passed their probationary period by about six months, have not yet heard if they have been regarded as satisfactory; and will he take steps to ensure that in future they are informed of the result in a matter of weeks?

Mr. Tomlinson

It is a matter for the local education authorities concerned, and I am calling their attention to this aspect of it.
