§ 18. Mr. Piratinasked the Minister of Labour whether his attention has been drawn to the dismissal of a shop steward by the American Commanding Officer at Burtonwood, Lancashire; and in the interests of industrial peace, what steps is he taking to prevent trade union discrimination towards civilian employees of the American forces stationed in Britain.
§ Mr. IsaacsThis man was discharged on grounds of redundancy before his appointment as a shop steward had been notified to the Commanding Officer. I understand that he has since obtained other employment. There was no question of trade union discrimination and at a meeting held under the auspices of my Department the Commanding Officer and the trade union have now made arrangements for joint discussion of any matters of mutual interest arising in future.
§ Lord John HopeIn view of the wording of the Question, may I ask what conceivable interest a Communist can have in the maintenance of industrial peace?
