HC Deb 24 February 1949 vol 461 c2016
75. Colonel J. R. H. Hutchison

asked the Minister of Education whether he will appoint a committee to investigate and report upon the extent to which Communism is instructed in schools by school teachers.

Mr. Tomlinson

I am aware of no occasion for such an investigation.

Colonel Hutchison

Are we to understand that the right hon. Gentleman is saying that no Communism is taught in schools; and is he aware that a letter from the London district committee of the Communist Party to Communist teachers has been urging them to promote Communism wherever possible?

Mr. Tomlinson

I am aware of the letter to which the hon. and gallant Gentleman refers but I am not aware of its authenticity, which I should doubt to some extent from what I have seen of it. I am satisfied that there is nothing which calls for investigation in what might be described as instruction in Communism.

Mr. Gallacher

I should like to ask the Minister if he is satisfied that sufficient working-class education is taught in the schools and, if not, whether he would accept a few books from me.
