22. Mr. Beswick

asked the Minister of Food the wholesale and retail profit margins allowed on rationed and un-rationed sweets.

Mr. Strachey

The total gross profit margin received by wholesalers and retailers is approximately £24 million a year, but the Ministry does not control the proportions taken by wholesalers and retailers respectively. No sweets are un-rationed as yet.

Is there any control of percentage margins?

Mr. Strachey

Yes, Sir. These percentage margins are very carefully worked out in respect of all the different types of sweets.
