HC Deb 02 February 1949 vol 460 c1656
15. Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will now make a statement on the recognition of the State of Israel.

Mr. Bevin

I would refer my hon. Friend to the statement issued by His Majesty's Government on 29th January, copies of which I am having placed in the Library of the House.

Mr. Janner

Whilst appreciating the statement of my right hon. Friend may I ask what further practical steps have been taken to establish good relations between Israel and Britain?

Bevin

That is not in the Question.

Mr. R. A. Butler

Could the right hon. Gentleman tell us if a British representative has been appointed, and if so, what is his name?

Mr. Bevin

I would ask the right hon. Gentleman to wait for a day or two.

Mr. Emrys Hughes

In view of the esteem in which the Foreign Secretary is held in Tel Aviv could he not be persuaded to go there himself?

Mr. Bevin

I might be successful.
