HC Deb 02 February 1949 vol 460 cc1650-1
8. Dr. Segal

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what sums have been expended in the form of loans and subsidies from the British Treasury to the State of Transjordan during each year since 1944.

Mr. Bevin

Since the answer contains a number of figures, I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL. REPORT

Dr. Segal

Is it not the fact that this State is now completely bankrupt; and instead of giving subsidies to maintain its present rulers in power would it not be wiser to give loans in order to improve the conditions of its people?

Mr. Bevin

I do not think that arises out of the Question. The hon. Member has asked me for figures, and they will be in the OFFICIAL REPORT.
