HC Deb 01 February 1949 vol 460 cc1510-1
51. Mr. Byers

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the subsidy per pound and the import duty per pound on tea.

Sir S. Cripps

The present subsidy on tea is 10d. per 1b., and the import duty is 6d. per 1b.

Mr. Byers

Would it not be advisable to consider abolishing the import duty and increasing the subsidy to get a saving in administrative costs?

Sir S. Cripps

That would depend, of course, on considerations of long-term as well as short-term policy.
