HC Deb 07 April 1949 vol 463 c2213

The following Question stood upon the Order Paper in the name of Mr. COLLINS

67. To ask the President of the Board of Trade whether, in view of the increase in British newsprint production, he is now in a position to make larger allocations and facilitate an increase in the size of newspapers.

Mr. H. Wilson

With your permission, Mr. Speaker, I wish to answer Question No. 67.

As from 24th April, newspapers will be allowed to make a further increase in their sizes which will bring the present 5-page penny national daily up to 6 pages with appropriate increases in other cases.

I should also like to take this opportunity of informing the House that I hope that as from the beginning of July next, it will be possible to make an increase of about 50 per cent. in the permitted paper consumption of old-established periodicals and also to allow any newspapers or periodicals which are at present restricted to 8 cwts. of paper in four months to double this quantity.
