Viscount Hinchingbrookeasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether he is aware of the impending loss to His Majesty's Dockyard, Portland, of the services of a number of men given notice to quit their flats by 20th April in favour of the new staff at the Verne Citadel Prison; and what steps he is taking, in conjunction with the Home Office, to secure alternative accommodation for these men near their work.
§ The Civil Lord of the Admiralty (Mr. Walter Edwards)The Admiralty is aware that notice has been given to the tenants of accommodation belonging to the Prison Commission at Portland, including a number of Admiralty employees, and is in consultation with the Home Office.
§ Viscount HinchingbrookeCan the hon. Gentleman assure me that these 24 families in my constituency will not have 2195 to fend for themselves without assistance from the Government Department which is turning them out or the Government Department which is responsible for their work?
§ Mr. EdwardsI can give no assurance with regard to these people. Out of the 24, there are only 11 who are Admiralty employees, and, as I have said, we are going into the matter with the Home Office to see if we can help them.
