HC Deb 22 September 1948 vol 456 c879
48. Sir Ralph Glyn

asked the Minister of Defence if he will consider, in conjunction with the Service Departments concerned, the financial burden placed on officers of the three Services having to pay Purchase Tax on all articles of uniform; whether, in view of the high cost of uniforms now prevailing, any estimate has been made of the increased expenditure in which officers are involved on promotion, etc.; and what steps he considers should be taken at once to meet this situation.

The Minister of Defence (Mr. A. V. Alexander)

Yes, Sir. This matter is already being considered, and perhaps the hon. Member would be good enough to put down his Question again early in the next Session.

Commander Noble

Would the right hon. Gentleman consider readjusting the £35 tax free allowance which has remained at that same figure for some years?

Mr. Alexander

The whole question is under consideration by the three Services. I am afraid that getting them into line as far as possible will take some little time.
