HC Deb 24 November 1948 vol 458 cc1241-2
44. Commander Noble

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the present unemployment figures for Malta.

Mr. Creech Jones

I am informed by the Government of Malta that the number of registered unemployed at the end of October was 1,818.

Commander Noble

Is the Minister aware of the great indignation caused in Malta by the virtual closing down of B.O.A.C., and could he say whether that is in accordance with Colonial policy?

Mr. Creech Jones

That question should be addressed to the Minister of Civil Aviation.

Commander Noble

Could the Minister answer the latter part of my question?

Mr. Creech Jones

Obviously, our whole policy in Colonial territories is for the extension of air facilities. A very vigorous policy has already been pursued in that direction.

Mr. Stanley

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether he was consulted beforehand by the Minister of Civil Aviation and whether he agreed to the closing down of Malta Airport?

Mr. Creech Jones

I am not aware that Malta Airport has been closed down.

Discussions are now taking place between my Department and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
