HC Deb 24 November 1948 vol 458 cc1236-7
36. Mr. Channon

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is yet in a position to make any statement about the progress of the Committee set up in Malaya to deal with the question of what compensation should be paid to the widows of those whose lives are lost during the present disturbances in that territory.

31. Sir Peter Macdonald

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is yet in a position to make any statement as to what decision will be made about the compensation for the widows of those planters and other Europeans who have lost their lives as a result of recent disturbances in Malaya.

Mr. Creech Jones

The Special Committee appointed in Malaya to consider this matter recommended a scheme which is now before the Governments of the Malay States and Settlements for their agreement prior to submission to the Federal Legislative Council.

Mr. Channon

Can the right hon. Gentleman say whether a decision will be made public?

Mr. Creech Jones

I imagine a decision will be made public. It will go before the Federated Legislative Council.

Lieut.-Colonel Sir Thomas Moore

What about those who are still suffering? What compensation or temporary compensation will be given?

Mr. Creech Jones

Some temporary arrangements have been made in all cases of distress.

Mr. Gammans

Will the right hon. Gentleman say if this report admits that the Government accept liability?
