HC Deb 23 November 1948 vol 458 c1062
23. Mr. Rankin

asked the Minister of Labour how many European Volunteer Workers are employed in Scotland; and of these how many are in agriculture.

Mr. Ness Edwards

Approximately 7,000 European Volunteer Workers have been placed in employment in Scotland and of these, approximately 4,500 have been placed in agriculture.

Mr. Rankin

In view of the fact that the arrangements for potato planting next year must now, or very soon, be under way, will the hon. Gentleman try to secure more European Volunteer Workers rather than use schoolchildren for the ingathering of the crop?

Mr. Edwards

There will no difficulty in supplying Scotland with the European Volunteer Workers required.
