HC Deb 17 November 1948 vol 458 c369
50. Captain John Crowder

asked the Minister of Food why eight points have to be given up for a 1 lb. tin of syrup when a 2 lb. tin can be obtained for 14 points.

Mr. Strachey

In order to encourage the sale of the larger tins, which are much more economical in tinplate.

Captain Crowder

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider this matter a little further, because it is hard on a person living alone, who has only one ration book, and who may not want 2 lbs.? Surely the points value should be halved?

Mr. Strachey

I appreciate that point, but we cannot distribute present quantities of syrup, owing to the shortage of tinplate, unless we did what we are doing now.

Mr. Keeling

Why not try putting up the price of the smaller tin?

Mr. Strachey

In this case we much prefer rationing to be by points rather than price.
