HC Deb 11 November 1948 vol 457 c1699
19. Squadron-Leader Sir Gifford Fox

asked the Minister of Health what steps have been taken by his Department since the enactment of the Water Act, 1945, to assist amalgamations of water undertakings; and whether he has any new plans for accelerating developments of this character.

Mr. Bevan

As the first stage, detailed surveys are being made by my engineering inspectors throughout the country. Fourteen surveys have been completed, and seven are in progress, which, together, will cover the greater part of the country. The action to be taken by my Department is being considered in the light of the information revealed by these surveys.

Sir G. Fox

Is the Minister aware that, until these surveys are completed, a great many people in rural areas are unable to get water?

Mr. Bevan

As the hon. and gallant Member knows, a very large number of additional services are being established in rural areas even now. Had these surveys been made many years ago, the people concerned would have had the water long before this.
