HC Deb 04 November 1948 vol 457 cc1020-1
42. Air-Commodore Harvey

asked the Minister of Health what arrangements exist for supplying motor cars to district nurses.

Mr. Bevan

The possibility of improving the supply of motor cars for midwives and home nurses is being examined. Arrangements already exist for motor dealers to give preference to midwives.

Air-Commodore Harvey

Does the right hon. Gentleman realise that there is great concern in the country districts about this matter, and will he try to give a more explicit answer saying that these district nurses will get a very high priority for motor cars?

Mr. Bevan

I have said in my reply that I am making inquiries to see whether some preference can be given. Hon. Members know that this is an extremely complicated matter, but I am hoping to get over the difficulties.

Wing-Commander Hulbert

Will the Minister not only endeavour to get cars, but approach his right hon. Friend the Minister of Fuel and Power to see that these people get ample petrol?

Mr. Bevan

We have been anxious not to have any system of rigid control because I know that that is objectionable to hon. Members in all parts of the House.
