HC Deb 03 November 1948 vol 457 c835
11. Mr. Keeling

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty whether he is aware of the proposal to re-condition H.M.S. "Implacable" and put her in dry dock at Greenwich on permanent exhibition as one of the only two ships which have survived from the battle of Trafalgar; and whether he will give an assurance that no step will be taken to sink her unless and until the proposal to recondition her is abandoned.

Mr. Dugdale

The answer to both parts of the Question is, "Yes, Sir."

Mr. Keeling

Does the Admiralty agree that a ship which fought at Trafalgar would be a magnificent addition to the sights of London and a splendid adjunct at Greenwich to the National Maritime Museum?

Mr. Kirkwood

Manned by the Tory Party.

Mr. Dugdale

I do not want to prejudge the issue or minimise its importance, but may I point out that this ship did not fight on the British side but on the French side at Trafalgar.

Mr. Keeling

What difference does that make?

Commander Noble

Could the Minister say whether the London County Council have been approached on this matter?

Mr. Dugdale

No, Sir.

Commander Noble

Will it be?
