HC Deb 01 November 1948 vol 457 cc494-5
17. Mr. Martin Lindsay

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether His Majesty's Government have yet received any information that the Chinese Government are prepared to arrange compensation payable for damage done recently to British interests in Canton.

Mr. Mayhew

I regret to say that there has been no progress since my reply on this subject on 20th September. Negotiations are continuing.

Mr. Lindsay

Has the Minister any hope at all that these negotiations are likely to bear fruit?

Mr. Mayhew

I can only say that we are not satisfied with the position and we are doing all we can to bring these negotiations to a conclusion.
