HC Deb 13 May 1948 vol 450 cc2267-8
25. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Health approximately how many mental deficient; are now in public institutions; how many are waiting for this accommodation; and whether the problem of accommodation and suitable treatment shows any improvement over the past twelve months.

Mr. Bevan

The number of mental defectives in public institutions on 1st January was 53,207. The number awaiting removal to institutions on that date was 3,905. The answer to the last part of the Question is in the affirmative.

Mr. Sorensen

Will the Minister say what plans now exist to reduce still further this alarming number of patients who are without accommodation?

Mr. Bevan

We are making a close inquiry to see whether we can get priority for building.

Mr. John Lewis

How many of these people have been certified?

Mr. Bevan

I cannot answer that question without notice.
