HC Deb 13 May 1948 vol 450 cc2280-1
63. Mr. Skeffington

asked the President of the Board of Trade who are his Department's representatives on the governing body of the British Standards Institution; and how many meetings they attended in 1947.

Mr. H. Wilson

The Board of Trade are represented both on the General Council of the British Standards Institution and on its Executive Committee by an official holding the rank of Assistant Secretary. During 1947 the Board of Trade representative attended four of the five meetings held by the Executive Committee.

Mr. Skeffington

In view of the very handsome contribution which the Board of Trade makes to this institution, totalling £37,000 last year, is he satisfied that this work is proceeding on a systematic rather than on a piecemeal basis?

Mr. Wilson

Yes, Sir, I am quite satisfied about our relations with the British Standards Institution. We must have the full co-operation and consent of industry in the drafting of standards, and, therefore, we do not think there is any case for more direct control.
