HC Deb 11 May 1948 vol 450 cc1933-4
5. Mr. Gilzean

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what provision is being made for recreational accommodation for forestry workers in Scotland.

Mr. Woodburn

In most areas forest workers are drawn mainly from the local community and share their recreational facilities. Where possible buildings have been made available for use as village halls, and in the planning of new villages provision will be made for halls. Recreational accommodation is available in the larger Forestry Commission hostels.

Mr. Emrys Hughes

Is the Secretary of State for Scotland aware that in some of these forestry camps, as in Dunoon, they are not even able to hold political meetings in these recreational centres because there is some ban on them, and will he look into the matter to see if this freedom can be given to these workers?

Mr. Woodburn

It is a matter of opinion whether politics is recreation. It might come under the heading "Education" in some cases, but I need particulars of that, and I will look into it.
