5. Mr. Baker Whiteasked the Minister of Fuel and Power the reason for the sharp fall in exports of coal to Denmark in the first quarter of 1948, as compared with the same quarter of 1947.
§ Mr. GaitskellExports of coal to Denmark, which ceased in February, 1947, with the general ban then imposed on coal exports, were not resumed until March this year on the conclusion of the Anglo-Danish Trade Agreement. Since then, more than three times as much coal has been exported to Denmark as in the first quarter of 1947.
Mr. Baker WhiteIs the Minister aware that exports fell in the first quarter of 1948 from 21,000 tons to 1,789 tons, and is he satisfied that the lag on that will be caught up by the end of the year?
§ Mr. GaitskellI have explained that exports were not resumed until March. I think that we can look forward with some confidence to achieving our objective in regard to exports.
