§ 54. Mr. Osborneasked the Minister of Food how much fish has been condemned as unfit for human consumption during 1265 the past two months at Grimsby; what is the reason for this wastage; and is he satisfied that the steps recently taken will prevent a recurrence.
§ Dr. SummerskillBetween 1st March and 24th April, 765 tons of fish, out of 36,000 tons landed, were condemned at Grimsby. These losses arose from various causes. My right hon. Friends, the Fisheries Ministers, and I are taking every practicable step towards the landing of better quality fish and the reduction of waste.
§ Mr. OsborneCan the Parliamentary Secretary explain why it is that seven times more fish is being condemned today at Grimsby than before the war? Who is responsible for this, and what is she doing to put it right?
§ Dr. SummerskillThe main cause is due to long voyages. I understand that the fish was badly handled in this case, and that there was a delay in landing. We have set up a committee comprised of officials from the Department and from the industry, and I hope that these conditions will improve.
§ Mr. OsborneDo I take it from that reply that the Parliamentary Secretary considers the fish was bad before it was landed, due to the fault of the fishermen?
§ Dr. SummerskillYes, Sir, adequate care was not taken on the ship.
