HC Deb 25 March 1948 vol 448 cc3335-6
48. Mr. Bossom

asked the Minister of Labour where he is to house workers whom he is to transfer to the cotton industry, in view of the housing shortage in these areas at the present time.

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Labour (Mr. Ness Edwards)

Lodgings are available for some of the workers, and others will be accommodated in existing hostels and in additional ones which are being provided by the adaptation of Service camps and other premises.

Mr. Bossom

Is there not already a very great shortage of housing accommodation in these areas? Where does the Parliamentary Secretary intend putting these people? Why cannot camps be used for this purpose?

Mr. Ness Edwards

These hostels are not usually used for accommodating families, but are used to accommodate single people. It is because we can use the camps for single people that we are now adapting them for this purpose.
