HC Deb 24 March 1948 vol 448 cc3004-5
33. Mr. Gallacher

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies why work on the Caura Dam, Port of Spain, Trinidad, has been stopped, after £500,000 has already been spent on its partial construction; and whether, in view of its importance to the people of Port of Spain, it is intended to complete this dam.

Mr. Creech Jones

In view of the financial position Of the Colony, the Legislative Council have decided that funds to complete the construction of the Caura Dam cannot be spared at present. This decision will not affect existing supplies of water to Port of Spain. The question whether the dam should be completed is a matter for the local Government, who will no doubt give sympathetic consideration to the matter as soon as financial circumstances permit.
