§ 37. Mr. Anthony Greenwoodasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of the rising price of food in Mauritius, he will inquire into the conduct of markets and the whole operation of food control in the Colony.
Mr. Creech JonesAlmost all basic foodstuffs are imported, and increases in their landed price are outside the control of the Government of Mauritius. The Government do, however, regulate supplies and prices to the consumer by rationing, subsidisation and price control. Profit margins are reviewed periodically and most were reduced about June, 1947. I understand that the Supplies Control Organisation is operating efficiently.
§ Mr. GreenwoodIs my right hon. Friend aware that, in spite of the steps to which he has referred, the price of flour is now three times what it was before the war—it has increased 20 cents per lb. during the last three months—and, in view of this statement, will he look at the matter again?
Mr. Creech JonesThis matter is under the constant supervision of the Colony, and flour is actually subsidised.
