§ 58. Mr. Geoffrey Cooperasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, in the Monthly Digest of Statistics for non-industrial staff employed in the Civil Service, under the "Analysis by Departments," he will analyse the figures in future editions for "Other Departments," in view of the increase since 1st April, 1939, from 57,000 to 97,000.
§ Mr. Glenvil HallNo, Sir. I do not think this necessary; fuller information is presented to the House each quarter in a detailed statement showing civil staffs employed in Departments.
§ Mr. CooperIn view of the general tendency for an increase in the Civil Service, is it not right and proper that Members of this House and the public should be kept informed of the monthly increase so that they can keep a check? Would my right hon. Friend reconsider this matter?
§ Mr. Glenvil HallThere is a paper shortage and these figures cannot be further broken down in the Monthly Digest of Statistics. We provide these figures quarterly and sub-totals greater than 10,000 are given in the Digest. I think that this is fairly reasonable, and I hope that the House will be satisfied.
