HC Deb 18 March 1948 vol 448 cc2282-3
54. Mr. Bramall

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what forms of dollar expenditure envisaged by the Economic Survey, 1948, will now have to be curtailed owing to the proposed expenditure of dollars on American films.

Mr. Glenvil Hall

Allowance was made in the Economic Survey for a greater rate of expenditure of dollars on American films than will in future take place.

Mr. Bramall

Is my right hon. Friend aware that it is extremely difficult to do what every hon. Member of this House desires to do, to convey to the people that in fact the calculations made in the Economic Survey are for the very minimum expenditure of dollars necessary, when we are informed that this large expenditure of dollars is to be made on an unnecessary import of films?

Mr. Glenvil Hall

I have just pointed out that we are not only not spending extra but we are spending less than half of what was expected in the Economic Survey.
