HC Deb 10 March 1948 vol 448 cc1239-40
58. Mr. Heathcoat Amory

asked the Minister of Food what quantity of dried milk was exported from this country during 1947; and how much home-produced liquid milk was used in its manufacture.

Mr. Strachey

Four hundred and eighty tons were exported of which only about 200 tons was home-produced. This quantity would require 370,00o gallons or less than.03 per cent. of all milk sold off farms.

Mr. Amory

Does the right hon. Gentleman think it right that home-produced milk should go for export as long as the milk in this country is in such very short supply?

Mr. Strachey

We think it right that.03 per cent. should be used for this purpose, which is for particular exports to Malta and Gibraltar and special cases of that kind.
