HC Deb 10 March 1948 vol 448 cc1212-3
16. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what provision exists for the defence of poor persons in the administration of justice in the various African British Colonies respectively.

Mr. Rees-Williams

Provision exists in the legislation of most of the African Territories for assigning legal aid to poor persons in certain cases. I have asked all the Governors concerned for a report on the matter and I will write to my hon. and learned Friend when I have received their replies.

Mr. Hughes

Will the Minister ensure that, as far as possible, the administration of justice in those Colonies is similar to, and as near as possible to, the administration of justice in this country?

Mr. Rees-Williams

I will write to my hon. and learned Friend on the matter when I get the reply.
