HC Deb 09 March 1948 vol 448 cc1000-1
38. Mr. Walter Fletcher

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that Purchase Tax is evaded on, many Shetland woollen goods; that this imposes great hardship upon traders who find themselves in competition with such tax-free goods; and whether he will take steps to prevent this abuse.

Sir S. Cripps

I am at present considering what steps, if any, I can take in this matter.

Mr. Fletcher

If I send the right hon. and learned Gentleman certain details of transactions leading to this abuse, will he give attention to the matter?

Sir S. Cripps

I think we have got all the details. We are aware what the circumstances are.

Mr. M. MacMillan

Will the Chancellor of the Exchequer take into consideration the fact that one of the organisations referred to is a sort of co-operative organisation, and that we want to encourage this type of organisation as far as we can in this area?

Sir S. Cripps

I will certainly take that into account.
