HC Deb 08 March 1948 vol 448 c798
73. Mr. Collins

asked the Minister of Food whether in view of the large scale purchase of Spanish oranges, and the consequent cessation of consumer rationing, he will now permit the distribution of oranges by wholesalers other than those with a 1939 entitlement.

Dr. Summerskill

While we are at present enjoying ample supplies of oranges, after April the allocations will be less frequent, and would not justify a general extension of the wholesale distributive arrangements. We are however, reviewing the existing system of wholesale allocations of all fruit imported by my Department.

Mr. Collins

Can my right hon. Friend say whether special consideration will be given to ex-Service men who have returned to the trade, and who are at present getting no allocation or a smaller one than they otherwise would have had?

Dr. Summerskill

I agree that these matters must be considered. In my opinion, the present allocation is out of date. The whole question needs reviewing.

Professor Savory

Can the hon. Lady say what prospect there is of obtaining Jaffa oranges under present conditions?

Dr. Summerskill

A very good prospect.
