HC Deb 05 March 1948 vol 448 cc705-6

12.45 p.m.

Mr. J. Edwards

I beg to move, in page 36, line r, to leave out from "recover," to "from," in line 2.

I think that this Amendment can be taken with the next Amendment. It was pointed out in Committee that there seemed to be some risk that local authorities undertaking the burial or cremation of a body might make a profit on the transaction. I think there is no doubt that they will not be able to do so, if these Amendments are accepted.

Further Amendment made: In page 36, line 5, at end, insert: expenses incurred under Subsection (1) or Subsection (3) of this Section and not reimbursed under the next following Subsection." —[Mr. J. Edwards.]

Mr. J. Edwards

I beg to move, in page 36, line 15, at the end, to insert: and an authority shall not cause a body to be cremated under this Section where they have reason to believe that cremation would be contrary to the wishes of the deceased. There are a number of people who have quite decided views about cremation, and this Amendment has been put down in order to meet the wishes of everyone concerned.

Amendment agreed to.
