HC Deb 28 June 1948 vol 452 c1810
11. Mr. Platts-Mills

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will make public the British Note to Hungary protesting about the terms of compensation offered under the Hungarian Nationalisation Bill.

Mr. Mayhew

The Hungarian Nationalisation Law exempts from nationalisation all concerns in which the foreign interest is greater than 50 per cent. Thus the question of compensation should only arise in the case of minority British holdings in Hungarian companies. No terms of compensation for these holdings have yet been announced and there has been no protest of the kind described in the Question. The hon. Member may, however, rest assured that we are keeping a close watch on the effect, on all British interests, of the application of the law and that those interests will be defended.

Mr. Platts-Mills

Would the Foreign Secretary not having protested, now send a note of congratulation on the efficient and speedy way in which nationalisation has been carried out?
