HC Deb 24 June 1948 vol 452 c1535
11. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Minister of Fuel and Power what interim payments have been made in respect of compensation to coalowners.

Mr. Gaitskell

Payments of £9 million have been made in partial satisfaction of compensation in respect of stocks and stores, and £11,900,000 in respect of Interim Income.

Mr. Hughes

Can the Minister tell us how these payments stimulate production?

Mr. Gaitskell

They have very little to do with stimulating production. We happen to be carrying out an Act of Parliament.
