HC Deb 24 June 1948 vol 452 c1543
22. Mrs. Florence Paton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has yet come to a decision with regard to the possibility of abolishing dietary punishment in Borstal Institutions.

Mr. Ede

Yes, Sir. After consulting the visiting committees of all Borstal institutions, I have decided to introduce, for an experimental period of two years, revised arrangements which will involve the abolition in Borstal Institutions of the present form of dietary punishment.

Mrs. Paton

Is my right hon. Friend aware that this will give great satisfaction to all enlightened opinion?

Colonel Gomme-Duncan

Will this apply to Borstal Institutions in Scotland as well?

Mr. Ede

I think that a Question on that point should be put down for my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Scotland.
