HC Deb 21 June 1948 vol 452 cc930-1
21. Major Tufton Beamish

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many Soviet citizens have arrived in the British zones of Germany and Austria, shown separately, en route for Palestine since 1st January; what form of assistance is given to these people; and what has been the approximate cost of such assistance.

Mr. McNeil

I am advised that our authorities have no record of any Soviet citizens having entered the British zones of Germany and Austria or left en route for Palestine during this period. The remainder of the Question does not therefore arise.

Major Beamish

Will the Minister of State look further into this? Is he aware that numbers of Zionists wearing Communist badges have arrived recently from the Soviet Union en route for Palestine, and does he think it right that these people should be partly maintained at the cost of the British taxpayers?

Mr. McNeil

I will, of course, be glad to look at any details which the hon. and gallant Gentleman has to submit, but we have no records bearing out his innuendoes.
