HC Deb 15 June 1948 vol 452 cc241-2
39. Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for War what steps he is taking to guard or dispose of explosive clumps in the West of Scotland.

Mr. Shinwell

Civilian watchmen, military guards and motor cycle patrols are on duty at the depot to which my hon. Friend is referring. Guards are augmented at weekends. The ammunition is being disposed of as fast as possible.

Mr. Emrys Hughes

Is the Minister aware that at a recent trial in Scotland statements were made that grenades, bombs and land mines were being freely stolen from dumps all over Scotland, and will he take precautions in the future to prevent that happening?

Mr. Shinwell

I am aware of what occurred recently. I regret it, but the fact is that unless we are able to provide manpower and transport to remove these dumps, many of them must remain. However, we are proceeding with the work as expeditiously as possible.
