HC Deb 13 July 1948 vol 453 c1151

Amendment made: In page 17, line 12, after "possession," insert "as aforesaid."—[Mr. Ede.]

Mr. Ede

I beg to move, in page 18, line 41, at the end, to insert: (10) For the purposes of this Act, a per son shall be deemed not to have attained a given age until the commencement of the relevant anniversary of the day of his birth In English law a person is deemed to attain his majority on the day before his twenty-first birthday, but in Scottish law he attains his majority on his twenty-first birthday. It is important, for the purposes of this Bill, to have a uniform date both in England and Scotland, and we have therfore adopted the Scottish method of reckoning the date on which a person attains his majority. May I, as an Englishman, commend this Amendment, to the Committee?
